Every single conversation I've ever had where someone discovers I'm a Cliff Richard fan goes like this:
Them: (polite, but wanting not to be) "So you like Cliff? Whhhhy?" Me: (dreamy) "It's the music, it's amazing. I guess it's been part of my life for so long that his records have sort of become the soundtrack to my life. And I genuinely love his music, it's so rock'n'roll."
Them: (expecting me to have said I want to marry him) "Really? The music?"
Me: "Yup"
*pause*
Them: (excited) "I/my mum met him once at a church/concert"
Me: (intreagued, in case there's more to this story than they sang Mistletoe and Wine with him and he was nice) "Oh?"
Them: (excited) "I/she sang Mistletoe and Wine with him. He was nice"
Me: "Did you sway?"
Them: (thrilled by the cultural reference) "Yes!!!"
*pause*
Them: (hoping this might make me cry) "My neighbour's aunt says he's a non-practicing homosexual."
Me: (not interested) "uh-huh" |

Do people really say "non-practising homosexual"? I don't think I've ever heard anyone use that phrase in real life.
I have met Sir Cliff. He was nice.
I didn't sing "Mistletoe And Wine" with him though. Nor sway. :-) | |
